Village and local news

AUGUST 2011
Shoots Garden Centre is now a part of the Squires garden centre chain.

Extensive work has commenced on the Old Plough public house resulting in closure for an extended period,
the 'Stoke Pub Club' has a new temporary venue at the Running Mare in Tilt Road.

JUNE 2011
Cobham police station has closed see alternative arrangements here.

MAY 2011
It is widely believed that Shoots garden centres are being raken over by Squires, so expect to see some rebranding at
the Stoke d'Abernon outlet in the not too distant future. It seems only yesterday it was Seymours !
Seymours now operates as a landscaping business from the same site.

Our local police team has changed, see the new officers here.

OCTOBER 2010
Stoke d'Abernon won the 'Business' category of the Fuller's Brewery Surrey Village of the Year competition.
More about the competition can be found here.

In common with many pubs throughout the country, the 'Old Plough' in Station Road closed in the
middle of the month. Enterprise Inns are the owners and we hope that it can be re-opened as a public house rather
than the premises being sold for other uses.

SEPTEMBER 2010
Unfortunately work has commenced on the M25 motorway service area although there seems
to be some doubt as to the ongoing finance for the project.

MAY 2010
Filming for a Churchill Insurance commercial took place in Vincent Road on the Saturday of the
late May bank holiday. The road was virtually taken over for the day,
The advertisement was screened in August & September. Pictures of the filming here.

PC Lee Fabry may be becoming more like an 'old style' village policeman by going around
on a bicycle as economies have necessitated his car being redeployed elswhere. Unfortunately it
looks as if Lee is also expected to fund the bike as well ! The Association has pledged £50
towards its purchase.

An alert resident called the Police on the night of 26th May, who arrested 3 people commiting
a crime in the playground being developed across the road from the pub. Our local PC, Lee Fabry
said that it was an excellent example of the Police and the Residents of Stoke d'Abernon
working well together.

MARCH 2010
Swayfields, the company behind the planned M25 service station at Cobham has gone
into administration. It is anticipated that the company will be re-financed and plans for
the service station remain unchanged. Pay and display meters may come to Elmbridge
for the first time. Surrey County Council plan to introduce parking restrictions at some 80
locations across the borough including Cobham High Street.

Surrey 50+ group is starting an Elmbridge borough group with financial assistance from
South East Regional funds. A public meeting to promote this is planned for 2:30pm
Tuesday 16th March at the Mole Hall, Bishop Fox Way, West Molesey. The main speaker
will be Prof. George Jones from the London School of Economics with other guest speakers
from Surrey County Council and Elmbridge Borough Council.
A rather obscure leaflet has been produced but more detailed information can be obtained
from Gail McKenzie at Elmbridge Civic Centre. E-Mail: gmckenzie@elmbridge.gov.uk

Surrey County Council has introduced 'yellow line' parking restrictions in the Tilt,
Stoke d'Abernon.

Part of the privately owned service road in front of the Stoke d'Abernon parade of shops has
recently been treated to some new Tarmac where the surface had badly broken up at the end
nearest the railway station. This was iniated by the Residents' Association and financed by the
shops.

JUNE 2009
Blundel Lane Traffic Management. Surrey County Council has suggested that a traffic
management scheme could be introduced at the railway overbridge towards the end
of 2010 or 2011.

MARCH 2009
Some incidents of "surfing" on the outside of trains have been observered at the station.
Just as the train is starting to move, the young participants get onto the step by a set of
doors clinging to the small strip of guttering above. They travel down the platform like this
before leaping off. Very dangerous - one slip could mean a fall between the platform and
moving train. In the old days the guard used to check a train until it was actually moving,
unfortunately not often the case nowadays.
